10x10 Capsule Items: Helmut Lang Jacket (consignment) / Free People Dress / Justify Suede Skirt / Sandgrens Clog Boots c/o Sandgrens
Accessories: Old Navy Scarf / Tootled Leather Bag

Speaking of going back to 2012 style, this whole "wearing a dress under a skirt" thing is very 2012! It was a popular thing on style blogs going back to 2008 when people would show all the different ways to remix your closet and this was a favorite trick. (I was looking through a Lucky magazine from 2012 the other day and they did 19 items, included coats and accessories, to make 45 days of outfits. It was really interesting to see how small changes do create a different outfit and to see that 19 items can go a long ways! I do miss those days of style magazines, they were a lot more fun to read.) I like this trick every now and then and I do love how the dress looks as a top but man, it's hard to tuck the skirt in and keep things from looking lumpy. I did wear it all day as this is a daily style diary and not a very fancy blog but I will admit that I wouldn't do it again. Note to self, this trick only works with very slim fitting dresses!

It's also the last day of the 10x10 and part of me is rather relived - I'm excited to get back to the rest of my clothes! It's been a great reminder however that I can go a long ways with a little but I also do not think I could be someone who has a closet of only 20 items. I will say that this challenge gave me new appreciation for this skirt, I feel like there's so many things to pair with it now and I am looking forward to some summer dressing. Our snow is trying to melt off and although the April winds are cold right now, it will soon be time for sandals.

10x10 Capsule Items: Madewell Silk Dress(ebay) / Old Navy Jacket Sandgrens Clog Boots c/o Sandgrens
Accessories: Free People Hat / Coach Leather Bag

This silk dress has a bit of a different vibe with the field jacket and the clog boots than it did with the piles of jewelry, leather jacket and sleeker boots. I will say that I wished I hadn't belted the dress because I don't really care for it here- I've belted it before and liked it but the belt feels like way too much in this outfit and it's not a favorite. I do kinda dig the green coat, I normally wouldn't have thought of pairing a green coat with a purple dress but because of the muted tone of the colors, I think it works. A simpler hat might have been better however, looking at the pictures now it just feels like a little too much and a weird step backwards my 2012 style. Which was...interesting. It was 2012 so piling stuff on was good but it wasn't something that feels really authentic to me for that time or now. I like drama in my outfits but I normally keep my hat simple and I usually wear a denim or leather jacket because those both what's comfortable and what I enjoy wearing. I suppose the lesson for this day for myself was don't try to reinvent the wheel and only pile on the jewels.

10x10 Capsule Items: Isabel Marant Top (ebay) / Vince Suede Leggings (ebay)/ Rag and Bone Boots (ebay)
Accessories Items: UO Hat(2013) /Cleobella Bag

Suede leggings again today but a bit of a different vibe. The temps have risen enough that a jacket is a little warm in the afternoon so I just wore the blouse for the 8th outfit. This blouse is one of my favorite, I love the loose fit, the embroidery and the material just gets better with wear - at this point it's so soft and lived in. I did do a crazy thing however.

I washed these suede leggings.

In The Washer.

And they live! Hurrah! Ha, in all seriousness, they were in need of cleaning and after quite a bit of goggling, I realized I could probably put in the washer on cold and a gentle cycle and then line dry them. what do you know, it worked like a charm! I did use a boot suede brush afterwards to brush the texture back a little but they feel pretty great. I don't like to be too precious about my garments because hey, I wear them in real life, but I also try to be respectful and take good careful of them which means mending and proper washing.

10x10 Capsule Items: Helmut Lang Leather Jacket (consigment) / Helmut Lang Tunic (ebay) / Vince Suede Leggings (ebay)/ Sandgrens Clog Boots c/o Sandgrens
Accessories Items: UO Hat(2013) /American Eagle Bag (2014)

This is close to the same outfit I posted a few days ago but swapping out the jacket, boots and bag makes for quite a different look. If you've been around the blog for a while you probably recognize this bag. It was a clearance buy from American Eagle but it's gotten so much use in the past three years that I could count it as a very successful purchase. It's easy to toss in the washer, I can pack a ton of stuff in it and it adds a lot of visual interest to an outfit.  It also goes with a surprising  amount of outfit, it's almost a neutral for me.

This coat is also an older buy from Old Navy and bought at a time I was trying to swap over from buying most of my items at Old Navy and trying to go mostly second-hand. I know it's not very cool in the ethical community but I can't throw any shade at Old Navy because I do remember when saving up for a while meant being able to get something full priced at ON and most items within ethical brands were extremely out of reach. (Which no shade thrown towards ethical brands because I think it's awesome that there are so many options now and that people are thinking about where and how clothes are produced.  However, sometimes they are out of reach for people and I don't think people should feel to alienated when their local thrifting is terrible and ON really is all that's within reach.)  I've always been a thrifter, even way back in the day when "did you get those shoes at Salvation Army" was a serious burn (so many middle school memories) and because I've had good luck with turning to the second hand market I haven't really turned towards ethical brands. My budget is still fairly low, especially in comparison to most of their prices so I've stuck with thrifting/consignment and ebay and have been lucky enough to find really amazing items that way.  In the five years this blog has been around I've only accepted a few c/o items, like these Sandgrens boots, not really out of an sense of virtue but because I've gotten really picky about what I add in and I don't really want anything I'll only wear a few times. (And to be honest, no one's breaking down my email in an effort to give me ALL THE THINGZ! If Rick Owens or All Saints came knocking, I would be like "please, I'll take anything."  Shameless.)

Anyways, I do like this outfit. It's a pretty lazy one, just a tunic, leggings and a jacket, but they are suede leggings that you cannot see through, the tunic is pretty bomb and this is a great spring jacket that can be wadded up on a camping trip and then thrown in the wash. You have to love that.

10x10 Capsule Items: Helmut Lang Leather Jacket (consignment) / Helmut Lang Tunic (ebay) / Justify Fake Suede Skirt / Rag and Bone "Newbury" Boots (ebay)
Accessories Items: UO Hat(2013) / Scarf (thrifted) / Cleobella Bag

Half way through the 10x10 challenge so far (which is hosted by Un-Fancy and StyleeBee) and so far I think this is one of my favorite outfits so far. I love pairing brown and black together and I am a little surprised that I haven't worn this top with this skirt before. The fringe scarf and bag amp up the bohemian vibe but I kept the rest of the look un-fussy with my cropped leather jacket and sleek, plain looking boots. I will say that this challenge has made me look forward to pairing other tops with this skirt, I'd slacked off wearing it last winter because I wasn't sure if it was my style still and this challenge showed me that it's actually a basic for me. Go figure, huh?
I will say that I am more apprcitive of my closet now, I'd been feeling a bit of a slump before and had thought a 10x10 might be a good kick in butt, however it's been so much more.  I am really excited to wear the rest of my closet once this is over!

10x10 Capsule Items: Helmut Lang Jacket (consignment) / Free People Dress / Sandgrens Clog Boots (c/o)Accessories: UO Hat(2013) / Balenciaga Bag (birthday gift, second hand through ebay) / Free People Scarf/poncho

This is quite similar to my first 10x10 outfit but I choose a different pair of boots, the Sandgrens clog boots to give it a little more visual weight on the bottom and because it was a bit chilly in the morning, I threw a large scarf/poncho over the top of my jacket. Unlike Monday, I also work the dress the correct way!

10x10 Capsule Items: Helmut Lang Jacket (consignment) / Helmut Lang Drape Tunic (ebay) / Vince Suede Leggings (ebay) / Rag and Bone "Newbury" Boots (ebay)Accessories Items: UO Hat(2013) / Balenciaga Bag (birthday gift, second hand through ebay)

The Statement necklace strikes again! I was going through all of my costume jewelry the other night and ended up giving my daughter most of the older items that didn't really suit my style now. She ended up with a good bucketful but one item I did keep was this old necklace from Icings. It's pretty dramatic but I like it with the cropped jacket and the all black outfit. The outfit itself might not look exciting but there's quite a bit going on with the textures of the suede, leather and the material  and then adding in some drape with the tunic and a little playing with proportions and tada, an interesting all black outfit.

This Helmut Lang tunic is one of my favorite tops and it's been a key item for me this past winter.  I really like the asymmetrical hem and how the tunic drapes and the leather jacket mimics the lines with it's own asymmetrical cut.  For fit, Helmut Lang is my absolute favorite brand, mostly because I think their items work really nicely for an hourglass figure. (I would also say that they work for all figures, especially after looking at fit pictures on the internet.)  I've been lucky in finding many well priced items on ebay or in consignment shops, I've paid below $20 for most of my items with coats/jackets being just a bit more expensive.  (You do have to be willing to wait if you are watching ebay - it comes and goes in waves.  Sometimes there will be nothing that's priced well and sometimes there's a ton.)
Style wise, this is a fairly typical outfit, a tunic top over leather/suede pants and a leather jacket to top it off.  I had this particular outfit in mind when I was picking out items for the 10x10 and knew that they'd be easy to mix and match.  I'm not sure if it was foolish to include only one pair of pants in the challenge with my other bottoms being skirt or dresses but for only 10 days, it will be fine.  If I do another 10x10 however, I think I will do with maybe 3 tops rather than 2 and only one jacket to give me a few more options!
